This guide was reviewed on 1 November 2026. It combines current primary-source guidance with AXON's documented system capabilities. It is a buyer's guide from AXON, with practical criteria you can use to compare suppliers.
Compare systems against the same building brief
Map the resident's journey: building entrance, elevator, permitted floor and parking area. Add visitors, cleaners, technicians and restricted rooms. A shared credential should still allow separate rules for each point. Agree what happens when a card is lost, a resident moves out or a payment period expires.
Use the same brief for every quotation. A lower hardware price may cover fewer outputs, less commissioning or a different management service.
| Selection criterion | What to ask the supplier | What to check in the proposal |
|---|---|---|
| Doors, lifts and garages | Which existing equipment interfaces are supported? | Named interfaces and work assigned to each contractor |
| RFID credentials | How are credentials authenticated, issued and revoked? | Supported card profile and replacement procedure |
| Local operation | What continues during an internet interruption? | Separate behavior for internet, local bus and power loss |
| Connected management | How do changes reach each controller? | Required connections and confirmation of distribution |
| Expansion | Are capacities counted as readers, devices or outputs? | Device schedule, cable segments and power plan |
| Ownership and support | Who controls accounts, data and future maintenance? | Handover, export options and support terms |
| Total cost | What is included now and charged later? | Equipment, labour, credentials and recurring fees |
Local access decisions and connected administration
Local control and online management serve different purposes. Local storage lets the controller use its installed card and permission data. Connected management distributes changes and provides remote administration. Ask the supplier to demonstrate the specified outage behavior rather than relying on the word “offline.”
Physical access control belongs to operational technology: network decisions affect real equipment. NIST's final Guide to Operational Technology Security includes physical access systems and treats reliability and safety alongside cybersecurity. For procurement, that makes continuity, recovery and safe equipment behavior useful acceptance criteria.
Agree who maintains network access, backups and administrator accounts. Door entry restrictions must preserve free emergency egress. Lift access equipment commands the supported access interface; the elevator controller retains its movement and safety functions.
Check the complete RFID and reader connection
A card's frequency or familiar appearance does not establish compatibility or protection against copying. Ask about the supported authentication profile, the reader-to-controller connection and credential replacement. Retaining old cards can be convenient, but their limitations stay relevant.
For projects specifying OSDP, SIA's 2026 implementation checklist recommends checking device interoperability, the required features and Secure Channel configuration. This is a useful example of verifying the complete connection. It is not a claim that AXON products implement OSDP. AXON's compatible subordinate-to-master and master-to-cloud communication is encrypted; a separate Wiegand connection remains unencrypted.
Where AXON fits: cabin control or a modular building system
AXON serves elevator, door, entrance, garage and barrier access projects. There are two configurations to consider. A concentrated cabin controller places many outputs near the floor-button interfaces; CCU-32 is the 32-output example. The modular configuration uses a master with compatible readers and relay nodes, inside or outside the cabin.
The same modular master can serve landing readers, the entrance and garage, alongside output nodes in the cabin over shared communication lines. This suits buildings that need coordinated permissions across several locations. Planning those lines, supplies and output assignments takes more work than installing one standalone entry point.
Master Lite is the economical compact option with four local SSR contacts. Master Premium has two local SSR contacts, two isolated CAN branches and onboard LTE. Choose Premium for those interface and connection needs. More local outputs are provided through suitable nodes; “Premium” does not mean more contacts on the master itself.
The current modular system supports up to 240 addressed subordinate devices, mixing readers and output nodes. Each master stores up to 1 million cards. Node8 provides eight SSR outputs. These figures measure different things: 240 devices is not a 240-door rating. See the architecture and device-count example before sizing a project.
Administration includes timed permissions, maintenance and payment records, advance phone notifications and automatic expiry enforcement at administrator-selected access points. Connected masters receive card and permission changes in real time. An administrator can remotely disable selected readers or subordinate devices through the connected system.
AXON should be assessed against the exact specification. Check existing reader compatibility and any required third-party integrations before ordering. SSR signal contacts require suitable equipment interfaces; they do not directly power a lock or motor.
Installation in Kosovo and projects elsewhere
For access control in Kosovo, ask who surveys the building, coordinates with the elevator contractor, installs the equipment and trains the administrator. AXON is based in Kosovo and provides installation services. Its system applications also cover projects elsewhere; installation arrangements and support are agreed for each location.
A worldwide shortlist should use the same technical questions, with local support, equipment compatibility and installation requirements added for the actual site. A brand's country of origin alone does not answer those questions.
Compare the installed price and ongoing cost
AXON's basic elevator access system starts from €100+. Compatible authenticated RFID cards or tokens start from €3+ each wholesale. One elevator starting allowance plus 50 credentials gives an illustrative €250+ starting total. Equipment choices, installation, taxes, recurring services and Premium additions must be itemized in the offer; this is not an all-inclusive package. Use the pricing examples and calculator to prepare quantities.
Before accepting a quotation, establish:
- Which entrances, floors and other points the price covers.
- Who supplies power, locks, cabinets, cabling and the equipment interfaces.
- Who owns administrator access and what data can be exported.
- How software fees, connectivity, replacements and support are charged.
- Which permission, outage and emergency-egress checks happen at handover.
- How another installer or administrator can take over later.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best access control system in the world?
There is no meaningful universal winner without a defined project. Compare compatibility, local operation, administration, support and ownership cost against the same building brief. A small entrance and a multi-building site have different priorities.
What should I prioritize for elevator RFID access?
Prioritize the supported elevator interface, floor permissions, credential authentication, administration and commissioning with the elevator contractor. Count floor-control signals separately from readers and relay nodes.
Can one system manage doors, a lift and a garage?
Yes. AXON's modular configuration can coordinate those points while keeping their permissions separate. The wiring, device mix and electrical interfaces must be planned for the equipment at each location.
Is Master Premium always the better purchase?
Select it when two isolated CAN branches and its onboard connectivity suit the project. Master Lite can be the more economical fit when its interfaces meet the requirement. Compare the complete installation and future expansion.
